Which endorsing body
Economics is on the British Academy list
The GOV.UK discipline list, updated 1 July 2026, places "Economics and Economic History" under the British Academy. The sub-disciplines are agricultural economics, business and management studies, economic history, econometrics and economics. Related entries also sit with the British Academy, such as political economy under political studies, economic geography under anthropology and geography, and economic philosophy under philosophy. Medical statistics and demography, by contrast, appears under the Royal Society.
- The British Academy reviews applications from the humanities and social sciences.
- For endorsed funder applications, UK Research and Innovation can endorse any research discipline within the funder's remit.
- Use the published list to decide which endorsing body, if any, covers your area.
The entry test
The active researcher test for economists
Appendix Global Talent, paragraph GTE 8.1, requires an applicant in this field to be "an active researcher in an academic, industry or government research institution." For peer review, the British Academy checks that you are an active researcher, for example in a university, a research institute or industry, and that you have a PhD or equivalent research experience. Its FAQ defines an active researcher as someone with "a sustained track record of research production in your field of talent." Equivalent research experience means at least three years of consolidated research time where you were the intellectual drive behind a project, with strong demonstrable outputs.
- Research outputs considered include publications, prizes and funding awarded.
- Work done during PhD studies, or being at the final stages of a PhD, does not count as equivalent research experience.
- For Exceptional Promise you must also be at an early stage of your career.
Routes
Fast track for economists in research posts
The British Academy shares the four research routes with the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Route 1 covers posts at approved UK institutions where research or innovation is a primary function. The approved list includes economic and social research organisations such as the Institute of Fiscal Studies, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Route 2 covers holders of listed fellowships, which include British Academy and Economic and Social Research Council awards. Route 3 is the UK Research and Innovation endorsed funder route. Route 4 is peer review, which does not need a job offer.
- For Route 1, the job description must state that a PhD or equivalent research experience is an essential requirement.
- A job description that lists a PhD as only desirable, or accepts another postgraduate degree instead, is not eligible.
- For Route 2, the fellowship must be held now or within the five years before you apply.
Reading the rules is one thing. Knowing how they apply to your own evidence is another.

When an economist may fit Tech Nation
Tech Nation is the endorsing body for digital technology. It defines product-led digital technology companies as businesses that provide a proprietary digital technical service, product, platform or hardware as their primary revenue source. The GOV.UK list of skills covered by Tech Nation includes experienced data scientists and data engineers, and sector-specific business experience such as payment infrastructure in fintech. Tech Nation states that technical applicants from non-technical organisations are eligible, but non-technical applicants from non-technical organisations are generally not eligible. Corporate roles, junior investors and analysts, and consultancy are listed as specialisms not considered suitable.
- An economist building models and data products at a product-led technology company may fit Tech Nation.
- An economist in a policy or advisory role at a bank or consultancy is unlikely to fit the Tech Nation definitions.
- Published research is one of four Tech Nation optional criteria, not an entry test.
Evidence
Evidence for British Academy peer review
The British Academy asks for a completed Stage 1 form, which must include your personal statement, a CV of no more than three sides of A4, and the required letters, each with the author's CV. For your most significant publications you must give the full bibliographic reference, the publisher and where each can be obtained, with a URL if available. Your application will be assessed under peer review solely on the required evidence you provide.
- Working papers, journal articles and books should be listed with full references in your CV.
- You do not need copies of degree certificates, employment contracts or conference certificates.
- Peer review also considers your expected contribution to UK research and wider society.
Letters
Letters for British Academy peer review
Exceptional Promise needs one letter of personal recommendation. Exceptional Talent needs a second letter with an objective assessment of your reputation. The first letter must be from an eminent person resident in the UK with internationally recognised expertise in your field, who is familiar with your work. The British Academy asks that it be signed, dated and on headed paper, with the author's personal email address and direct telephone number. The second letter must come from a different person, a senior member of a reputable UK organisation concerned with research or innovation in your field.
- Each letter must be written specifically for this application. A general reference letter is not accepted.
- Each letter can be up to 3 single sides of A4, excluding the author's credentials and contact details.
- The British Academy may refuse an application, or ask for more information, if there is no evidence that the author is a credible referee.

Article FAQ
Questions to settle before you spend time or money.
Use these answers to check the practical risks, documents, and decisions connected to this topic.
I am an economist at a central bank or ministry. Which endorsing body applies?
If your work is research, the British Academy list covers economics, and the active researcher test refers to academic, industry or government research institutions. You would need a sustained record of research outputs. A policy role without research outputs is unlikely to meet the test.
Do I need a PhD in economics?
The published criteria accept a PhD or equivalent research experience. The British Academy describes equivalent experience as at least three years of consolidated research time where you were the intellectual drive behind a project, with strong demonstrable outputs.
I am a data scientist with an economics background. Could Tech Nation be better?
It may be. The GOV.UK list of Tech Nation skills includes experienced data scientists and data engineers. Tech Nation looks for recognition in digital technology and contribution to product-led digital technology companies, not a research record.
Does an economist at a bank fit Tech Nation?
Tech Nation defines product-led digital technology companies by their primary revenue source. A bank's primary revenue is banking. Tech Nation says technical applicants from non-technical organisations are eligible, but non-technical applicants from non-technical organisations generally are not.
Can I apply to both endorsing bodies?
Each Stage 1 application must be for endorsement by an endorsing body in the field relevant to you. Choose the endorsing body whose criteria match your actual record. For personal immigration questions, ask an immigration solicitor.
